ST MARY

THE VIRGIN
Church of England Parish in the Diocese of Chichester
Welcome to St Mary's Church
The High Altar
The High Altar was installed in the Church in 1918 together with the reredos in memory of the parish's first vicar. For many years, the scenes across the base of the altar were hidden behind frontals made of embroidered cloth. The only time that the scenes were revealed was during the Easter Triduum. The Triduum is the period between Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday when the Church is stripped of all decoration whilst Our Lord's Passion and death are commemorated.
In recent years, the use of altar frontals has been discontinued and the magnificent artwork is on permanent display. The scene shows Christ after he has been taken down from the Cross with angels holding the nails and crown of thorns.
